Garbage Gladiators
This project was designed to work on the Xbox 360 game console and was written in C# using the XNA game libraries in Microfot Visual Studio Express 2005. I was in charge of creating all the 3D content as well as level design/creation. I shared the responsibilities in testing and in the general gameplay design. This was a project over summer in 2007 where we were asked to design a game from the ground up. It took on many forms before we eventually had decided upon some sort of bizarre mafia-like land grab competition between rival garbage companies. An idea we felt was unique and took advantage of the fact that people like to drive exotic vehicles (police car, school bus, etc.).
Initially the game was going to be much slower paced and while driving through the neighborhoods the players would be only collecting garbage in an effort to build better weapons for the second phase. In the second phase the players would face off against one another using the garbage previously collected as ammunition, armor and more. After having playtested this, however, we discovered the game was far too slow and, since the garbage was used for 3 or 4 different things, quite confusing. From this point we made sure to more frequently consult others in determing if an idea we wanted to move forward with was actually enjoyable to the player.
In the end, we created a much more interesting and entertaing product that allowed the users to use a variety of special power-ups to competetively collect garbage in a town. The winner was the player who collected the most garbage overall, not the most kills, thus promoting not only the more destructive aspects of the game but also collection. We were very satisfied with the project, especially considering it was our first major XNA project, and were also pleased that we managed to get everything planned into the game.
