The Soda Map
The Soda Map was an attempt to take a data set not usually mapped out in any particular form and to map it. I chose to map the three major soft drink producers in the United States (Coke, Pepsi, and Dr. Pepper/Seven-Up) and look at how they are related to a vast number of the products that we consume on a day to day basis.
Fascinatingly enough, upon completion I actually discovered things that the datasets alone did not belie. Coke, as opposed to what I had originally thought, has made almost all of its domestic products itself and has very few acquisitions. Pepsi, on the other hand, has a number of acquisitions but also has branched into a number of non-soft drink enterprises. As opposed to the other two, Dr. Pepper/Seven-Up's lineup is almost entirely made up of acquisitions. Additionally I discovered that the places of origin for drinks these companies make are geographically concentrated in certain parts of the US. This project was fascinating to me because I had not expected the simple reorganizing of data to reveal so much.
